The 34th Cumberland Regiment of Foot raised in 1702;
55th Westmorland Regiment of Foot raised in 1755;
The Border Regiment 1881 to 1959;
The King’s Own Royal Border Regiment 1959-2006;
The Duke of Lancaster’s Regiment (King’s, Lancashire & Border).

The King's Own Royal Border Regimental Museum and Border Regiment Museum itself was founded and opened in 1932 and was located in the Keep of Carlisle Castle until 1970. It was re-opened in its current location in the inner ward of Carlisle Castle in a buildiing named Queen Mary's Tower in 1973.
The Museum is both an Independent Trust and a Registered Charity (No. 271943).
All proceeds from the shop, research and outreach work support the upkeep of the Museum and the care of its collections and archives.
How to Find Your Way To Us:
The King's Own Royal Border Regiment musuem and Border Regiment Museum are in the Inner Ward Of Carlisle Castle. The Castle is located on Castle Way on the north side of Carlisle City Centre; 15 minutes walk from the railway station and 10 minutes from the bus station. Don't be put off by the dual carriageway there is a bridge and a very informative under pass below Tullie house (http://www.tulliehouse.co.uk/)

The Museum's Location at Carlisle Castle
Is in a building called Queen Mary’s Tower, a 16th Century building in the Inner Ward of Carlisle Castle. Within its walls are the original military and barrack buildings dated from the early 19th Century, which were used as the Border Regiment’s Depot from 1873 to 1959.
The Regiment still has a presence here with its Regimental HQ, TA and Army Cadet Force and Recruitment Team.

Two floors of displays tell the history of the Regiment from 1702 to the present day. The displays include a wide range of uniforms, weapons and artillery, equipment, silver, paintings, models, musical instruments, personal items and much more. Amongst the numerous gallantry awards in the large medal collection are the medals of six holders of the Victoria Cross. The collection now includes the original French Drums and Majors Staff of the French 34ieme Regiment captured by the 34th Regiment (Cumberland) after the French surrender at Arroyo Dos Molinos (Spain) 1811.
The collection also includes a 13th Century oak table said to have been used by Mary Queen of Scots and the only piece of medieval furniture left on the site. ( For further informatio visit http://www.marie-stuart.co.uk/)

A section of World War 1 Trench has been recreated on the ground floor. This includes a comprehensive display of weapons including a Vickers Mark 1 machine gun and the German Spandau machine gun captured by Sergeant Edward Mott VC DCM in 1917 for which he was awarded the Victoria Cross. Genuine World War 1 items of uniform including that of 2/Lt Walter Storie Paton A Coy 11th Battalion The Border Regiment (The Lonsdales), 2/Lt Paton was killed in action on 1st July 1916, and part of the
equipment carries bloodstains from where he was hit.

The Museum has an extensive library and archive of documents and photographs covering the period from 1702 to the present day. Documents include an extensive database (continually being updated) of names of soldiers 1830 onwards, WW1 War Diaries and some from WW2, medal rolls, Rolls of Honour, other casualty records. Enquiries may be made in person preferably by appointment, by letter (include A4 SAE), telephone, or e-mail (include full postal address). The Staff will undertake research, for which there is no set fee, but a minimum donation of £25 towards the cost of the research is expected (cheque payable to Central Bank King's Own Border).
